Vehicle check questions

Straight answers for checking a car before you travel, pay or buy.

What does a UKVIN vehicle check show?

UKVIN starts with available vehicle details and MOT information, then separates what has been checked from what still needs verifying. Provenance checks such as finance, theft, write-off, salvage and valuation are only shown when the relevant data source is available.

Is an MOT history check enough before buying a car?

No. MOT history can reveal useful mileage, failures and advisory patterns, but it does not prove a car is free from finance, theft or accident history and it does not replace inspecting the vehicle.

Can an MOT mileage difference mean a car has been clocked?

It can be a warning sign, but a single lower reading is not proof of clocking. Recording and data errors can occur. Compare dated MOT records with service invoices, the dashboard mileage and other evidence.

Where should I check the VIN?

Compare the VIN shown on the vehicle with the V5C and other reliable identity points. Locations vary by make and model, so UKVIN provides model-specific guidance where reliable information is available.

Does a valid VIN prove the vehicle is genuine?

No. A VIN can decode correctly and still require physical and documentary verification. UKVIN treats VIN decoding, recorded identity and physical identity as separate checks.

What should I check when viewing a used car?

Check identity and documents first, then dashboard warnings, tyres and brakes, body and structure, fluids, electronics and the areas highlighted by the vehicle's MOT history. Use a professional inspection when you are not confident assessing an issue.

What does Category S or Category N mean?

Category S records structural damage and Category N records non-structural damage. Category N should not be assumed to mean cosmetic-only damage. Repair evidence and the current condition of the vehicle still matter.

Can UKVIN tell me whether I should buy a car?

UKVIN can organise evidence, highlight issues and show what still needs checking. It should support your decision rather than claim certainty where evidence is missing.

Why does UKVIN show Not checked?

Because missing information is not the same as a clear result. UKVIN keeps unavailable evidence visibly unresolved instead of treating it as safe.

Are repair costs exact?

No. Any repair-cost figures are indicative planning ranges. Actual costs depend on the vehicle, parts, labour, location and what a physical inspection finds.

Should I pay a deposit before seeing a private-sale car?

Be cautious about sending money before you have seen the vehicle and checked its identity and documents. Verify the seller, vehicle and payment arrangements before committing funds.

What documents should I keep after buying?

Keep the advert, receipt, seller details, V5C information, service and repair evidence, inspection records and relevant messages. UKVIN's evidence tools are designed to help keep the buying record together.
